Written by Warren Ellis. Art and cover by John Cassady. In stores November 17. In the American desert, a woman waits patiently, glowing gently in the gathering twilight. She's been waiting a long time to tell her story; and now, finally, Planetary is coming for her. She is the last surviving remnant of a covert program that ran throughout the 1950s, an attempt to create darkly wondrous things that would defend America from a Communist invasion ? a program developed by a name very familiar to Planetary. The issue pays homage to several Cold War era 1950s movies: Attack of the 50 Foot Woman, The Amazing Colossal Man, Them! (Though, the ants portrayed in this issue are much larger than their counterparts in the movie), and The Fly. The title is a reference to the 1951 movie The Day the Earth Stood Still. Alice is drawn to resemble to actress Marilyn Monroe. Her disappearance around 1960 for "sleeping with the wrong men" is possibly a reference to Monroe's alleged affair with President John F. Kennedy and subsequent mysterious death at about that time. Credits include "with special thanks to Wendy Fouts."
